High ping times from ISA server

Problem:
We have a single subnet domain behind ISA 2004. Recently, our Internet has become painfully slow. Ping times from ISA were in the mid 700’s.

Solution:
Somebody tried to send 60MB of pictures spread out over 6 email messages via their company exchange account while on VPN. The messages got stuck in Exchange’s queue; as a result, Exchange repeatedly tried to send the hefty messages over and over again – consuming massive amounts of bandwidth.

I deleted the messages and now everything works like a charm.

“How Much CPU Power Is Really Needed?”

Let’s start off with some rhetorical questions. How often do you proactively and manually do a virus scan on your system when you check your email? Do you use Photoshop for more than just editing out red-eye (or at all)? When was the last time you multi-tasked with lots of programs? (More than just running FireFox, iTunes and Microsoft Word simultaneously) While most mainstream computers today have multi-core processors that can juggle several tasks, it can get confusing about how much processing power is really required for simple everyday applications. This article will discuss how multi-core CPUs relate to everyday real life computing needs.

Like many writers, students, small business people and others, I use Google Docs for a variety of tasks. Google Docs makes it easy for me work, no matter where I am. And I don’t have to worry about transferring files between my computers.

Three Great Alternatives to the iTunes Music Store

For the music lover, a visit to Apple’s iTunes Music Store is an incredible experience. The amount of music available, and the range of styles and artists, is definitely something to behold. And the fact that you can download most of the tracks to your desktop computer or laptop computer (and transfer them to your MP3/MP4 player or iPod) for under a dollar is a bonus.

Car ‘Bomb’ Closes NY Times Square

I notice how they say nothing about the street vendors who actually reported the smoking van. If they didn’t say anything or if they weren’t there at that time, it would’ve exploded.

And the methane from the blast would’ve not only blown up the stuff in it’s vicinity, the methane would cause OTHER CARS around it to explode, which would have effectively decimated Times Square, killing hundreds, if not thousands.

This story has been in NY Newspapers for a while now.

Wikipedia – All Aboard!

So much has been written and said about the website known as Wikipedia that many people may start to wonder what exactly Wikipedia is. Wikipedia is simply a Wiki Encyclopedia (a wiki being defined as “a Web site that allows visitors to make changes, contributions, or corrections” [Webster.com]). If the Encyclopedia Britannica is a chauffer-driven limousine, then Wikipedia is the bus loaded with passengers with each having a turn at the steering wheel.

In this Tech Tip, we’re going to take a look at this Wikipedia bus and check out what exactly it is.
