Word Processing Alternatives, Basic Word Processing

When you think about doing any kind of writing, the software that probably comes to mind is Microsoft Word or OpenOffice.org Writer. They’re powerful, they’re big, and they pack a lot of features and functions. But many of us don’t use a fraction of those features and functions. Let’s face it, writing a letter in Word is overkill.

There’s always something that you need to know how-to do. And need to know in a hurry. Things like replacing an oil filter, making the perfect turkey, planting an exotic plant, or replacing the hard drive on your desktop computer.

It used to be that if you wanted to learn how-to do something, you either needed to check a book or a videotape, or begged a friend or a family member for help. Not any more. You can, at a basic level (and sometimes beyond), get a grasp of a subject using the Web. And I’m not talking about random blog posts or Wikipedia, either.

Four Alternatives to Windows Media Player

Once upon a time, Windows Media Player (WMP) was a lean and not-so-mean audio and video player. It did a specific job, and did it fairly
well. It was pretty much an cheap MP3 player (and a couple of other formats, too) for your desktop computer.

But like a lot of software (not just the stuff out of Redmond), WMP got a bit too big for its own good. Now, it doesn’t just play audio and video. It’s also a DVD player, an iTunes wannabe, a CD ripper, an interface to MP3 players, and more. Sometimes I wonder if WMP packs a death ray or a connection to my blender that will help me make smoothies.
