Looking at the title of this week’s Tech Tip, you may think that we’ve flipped our lid.  After all, choosing a USB Hub should take about a many brain cells as, say, choosing which white T-shirt to wear. However, choosing the right USB hub these days can be more complicated than you may think. There are so many to choose from that it’s hard to know which one is best. While the function of the USB is generally the same, factors such as the number of ports, portability, additional port features, how close the ports are to each other as well as the cosmetic look can play a role in finding the perfect USB hub.

Tech Tip 120-Transferring Video to DVD–Part2

In part one of this series, we detailed exactly what is required to convert your VHS tapes to DVD. In this part, we’ll go over what you need to learn to be able to watch your creations on television.

To review: To convert VHS to DVD, you need a VCR (or VHS camcorder) to play the tapes, a hardware device that converts the analog signal into digital, and a computer that stores the data, and software that has the ability to edit the material, and burn in onto a DVD. While all of these components are available in multiple flavors, the basic process of getting the data onto the computer remains the same.

Before you start, the best thing to do is pop a commercial DVD into your player, and see what options it has. This will give you an idea of how much time and energy you want to put into the finished product. For example, if you’re putting material from multiple tapes onto one DVD, you might want to put each segment into its own chapter.

Hot tip:  A single sided, single layer 4.7GB DVD disc can hold up to 90 minutes of high quality video. Rather than push the limits, it’s better to split longer tapes into two (or more) DVDs.

Now that you’ve put your VCR in mothballs, you realize that the closet full of VHS tapes (or Betamax, if you bet on the wrong horse) contains valuable memories you would like to see again. Perhaps you want to relive your wedding, or post the video of you and your friends lip-synching “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” from the 7th grade talent show on YouTube. But you can’t be bothered integrating antiquated technology into your home theater setup, not to mention handling and storing those bulky VHS tapes.

Tech Tip 118 - Test Driving Linux Using a Live CD

So you’ve heard about Linux, and you’re itching to try it out. Why? Maybe you want to breathe some life into an older computer that can’t run Windows XP or Vista. Maybe you want to stretch your technical skills a bit. Or, maybe you’re just tired of Windows and need a change.

Normally, you install Linux in a couple of ways. One way is to use it to take over an entire hard drive. Or, you can partition your hard drive and have Windows on one portion of it and Linux on another. But, if you find that a particular version of Linux (called a distribution) isn’t quite right for you, getting rid of it or changing it can be a pain.
