While a good chunk of the tech world was watching the release of Windows 7 recently, there was another release of an operating system that rivaled that of Windows 7; if not for sheer volume then for sheer expectations and excitement. And that was the unveiling of Ubuntu 9.10.

Code named Karmic Koala in Ubuntu’s famously alliterative style, this release of the popular Linux distribution focuses heavily on usability. Also beefed up is its hardware support, especially support for wifi cards, network cards, and Intel graphics cards.

But Karmic Koala also packs some very interesting, and very useful enhancements at the user level.

Here Are 5 of the Best…

  1. I have found Karmic to be excellent. I installed Windows 7 on another machine to try and it is still MS, It doesn’t impress me in the least. Karmic runs beautiful on this machine, Amd Phonom 9500 cpu, 8 gig of ram and a 1 gig nvidia vedio card, Compiz is wild..

  5. Just loaded 9.10 a few days ago...smoother, faster, nifty.

My only criticism is the apparent inability to customize the log-in screen as in prior releases. It’s probably there but I haven’t found it yet.

Other than that, 9.10 continues it’s legacy of high quality, accessible Open Source software.

  7. I am a Linux user,I’ve had at least 9 versions of Linux that I have tried.I didn’t care for PC/OS aka..8.04..I don’t like Xoffice DeskTop..Ubuntu 9.04 worked the best for me..and now the new 9.10 is the cat’s meow for sure..As usual set up is simple and takes a lot less time than Microsoft..I never was a real fan of spending time on the Terminal.with all the command stuff, codes trying to remember what does does and what doesn’t work..not so with 9.10..The only thing I needed the Terminal for was at the very start--doing the intranet for the Laptop..easy fix!!..Terminal..sudo apt-get update before you try to get the WiFi working..plug in the erthent and it connected me right up and then run the command in the terminal and the restricted drivers for the wifi were there..reboot and the rest was simple as usual.
I love the new desktop features and back grounds..my wife finally jumped on board and loves the ease of use..her only complaint is..No Sims..So XP Home is on the Desktop just for her Sims..and Ubuntu 9.10 is her primary.
Ok if you don’t want to spend time on the Terminal.here’s what I did..Hard Drive Eraser..GParted (partitioner)..made 3 partitions..2 25 gig partitions and a 100 gig.partition.The 100 gig is a primary share and storage for Xp and Ubuntu..I put Xp on first and then ubuntu and ran the netrwork setups for both..It works sweet..
So go ahead and spend the big bucks for 7 or a little time and effort on Ubuntu..your choice..peace Joe

  9. WHOA! Hold on there Big Simba! This flavor of Ubuntu in not ready for mass distribution. I’ve been attempting to work with Karmic for three weeks and I’ve had one frustration after another primarily revolving around the NVidia video card in my system. I’m using a GEForce 5200 which is relatively old in the scheme of video cards. I installed 9.1 over my stable 9.04 version without a hitch. Then, the system decided to update the video drivers and from that point Karmic has been on a down hill ride. I’m finally able to boot and run Karmic at the command line but the GUI is hosed. I’ve been able to restore the GUI to a point where I have wallpaper but I have no login and nothing on the screen but wallpaper and a cursor. I’m stuck at that point. This has been a very frustrating situation and my research shows there are numerous other users out there with similar problems. I would advocate that if you are offered to update to 9.1, decline the offer for now and wait until users are reporting that the video problems are being solved. I should have followed the old adage, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”.

  11. Been using Ubuntu since v7 and thought it a good alternative to windows.  However, the last versions of Kubuntu (Ubuntu with the KDE desktop) have exceeded expectations.  I don’t use windows much anymore, as when I installed SP3 it got screwed up: won’t let me remove SP3, won’t shut down, etc.  Since I’m retired now and don’t need the design software, assemblers, compilers and so forth necessary for my work, I figured why not a free OS for most of my stuff.
Kubuntu 9.10 has done very well.  I haven’t installed the Nvidia video drivers on this installation yet (although I did on the last one and they worked well on the 6xxx GEForce).  I can do most of my playing with free software, although it does pain me a bit not using the thousands of dollars of software I have on the windows partition.  Still… Nice to give support on my terms instead of the terms of a huge profiteering outfit.  Just my opinion.
I’d recommend it to anyone.  A friend plugged it in who knows virtually nothing of computers and is using it happily.  And a little playing with things makes it a delight.

  13. I upgraded from an 8.xx version to 9.10 and lost my gui video on my Compaq 910us laptop.  I tried booting from the 9.10 CD afterwords to run from CD.  So I downloaded the version 9.04 iso and burned a CD.  The run from CD worked so I installed 9.04 and it is working again.  This laptop is supposed to use the ATI Radeon™ IGP Hardware Graphics for video.  I am afraid of version 9.10 until I hear that this has been fixed.

  15. A small but annoying glitch in an otherwise wonderful OS:  playing Freecell for more than 5 minutes will crash the video and restart it.  (It’s almost as if one had hit the ctrl-alt-backspace.) And it’s true on all five of the Asus netbooks I service, along with a Compaq laptop.  No apparent rhyme or reason to it.

  17. Very good article. I think I will now upgrade to Ubuntu too. I mean why not? The features seem to be good and it is free and open source! I also trust the information from what seems to be an experienced Ubuntu user.

  19. Windows 7 Upgrade is for people who are already running Windows XP or Windows Vista and want to upgrade to Windows 7.It is less costly than the full version of Windows 7,but you must already have a legal license for XP or Vista.
