Basics of RAID
A couple of the recent Tech Tips have made mention of RAID, but the level of detail required in those tips didn’t shed much light on what RAID actually is. I enjoyed your teachings, and plan on setting up my FIRST scsi RAID because of your article!
Hi!
Thanks for the article, I just had a few easy questions. I am going to build a home server (RAID 6), this means that I be buy a RAID card (RAID 6 is not normally on motherboards), so:1. Are all RAID cards compatible with all motherboards? If not then what should I watch out for.
2. (dumb question) I will be using SATA hard drives and I wanted to know where does the power come from for the drives that are connected to the RAID card?
- Does the power come from the RAID card?
- Or do you just connect a data cable from the RAID card to the hard drvie and then connect a power cable from the powersupply to the hard drives? Thanks a lot
PeterI have a very important question regarding hard drives, Im putting together a new computer and I ask a sales person of compusa store if I could use an ATA drive and SATA drive combine in the system, with the Motherboard(ASRock Wolfdale1333-D667 R2)and he said yes. I did all the assembly and configuration an it shows both drives there but on the windows Media Center Edition(XP)it dosn’t show the SATA(SLAVE) drive, I have to say the OP is in the ATA drive(MASTER)Please let me know if the problem is for combine the 2 drives or the problem is on the windows XP software an how to solve it.
Thank you for your help in this matter...John B.
