Heat. We all love the heat during the summer, lounging out by the pool or basking in the sunlight on the beach. But heat can be deadly, especially to your costly computer components.

This week we are going to talk about the basics of cooling your computer system and its components.

  1. We know what will happen to CPU if lost heat sink contact or cooling fan stop running, which usually showed as program lock-up during operation in our cases.  My question is, how I know it is CPU overheat, not software bugs or other hardware problem, if our customers report system lock-up, while we can’t go check?  Customers are always reluctant to open enclosure unless we know it is the problem and instruct them for simple fix, e.g., change fan or reapply grease.

  3. When installing a cooling fan on a hard drive, where does the power source plug into? The power cord going into the drive is the same that is on the fan and do fit together. Do these two go together? Or, does it plug into the tail that comes off of the wire that powers the hard drive? On the computer connectors, either a P5 and a P6 is stamped on the plastic plug part. Do these numbers mean anything beyode power connection port 5 and power connection port 6?  Thannks for your help!

  5. Someone said that its better for the cpu fan to draw air through the heatsink and out the fan. Another person said that to reduce noise, the cpu fan blows air down onto the heatsink. What is the real story regarding cpu fan direction?

  9. about a year ago now i replaced the heat sink fan with a used fan yes i also put new cooling goo under the heatsink unit, it all works fine with one exception, my computer does not recognize the new fan and therefore thinks its not working, everytime I turn the computer on I have to push F2 or it will shut back down.

I am not a computer geek nor can I afford to take it to one, is there a way for me to fix this?
