There’s no doubt about it, notebook computers surpassed their desktop computer counterparts in overall sales because of their mobility, small footprint and evolution into being virtually just as powerful. However, there are still several reasons to buy a desktop computer as they offer some fundamental aspects that are difficult for a notebook/ netbook / tablet to emulate. For example, desktop computers can have bigger screens, bigger storage capacity and can function as a centralized location, or a home base/dumping ground for your computing needs. Your desktop pc can also manage your home/office network, have more peripherals connected to it and can be upgraded with new parts in order to future-proof it.

  1. I have found the best way for me to utilize a laptop is by installing “Go To My PC” on my desktop and my laptop. That way no matter where I am, or how big a file is, I am actualling using my desktop with the laptop as a remote operating piece of equipment. This works best for me.

  3. While there is no doubt laptops are way more convenient, have upped their ability to boast a powerful little system, I am still a desktop person.

Desktops are not only capable of boasting more powerful components but, are easily upgraded, easier to repair and, most of all, a heck of a lot more stable and durable.

It has been my experience that a properly maintained desktop can last many years longer than the average laptop.

    So, here’s to the desktop!!

  5. Yes and they all work much better and way faster and are much more secure if you scrap windows and install Linux. The security center is just a coerup for all the vulnerable system files in win 7, I state this from doing computer repair for the past 15 years and having a continuous line of virus’s to remove. Het it does make me money, but that is all it’s good for.

  11. I have an old pavillion socket 939.  I’ve had this thing for over 7 years.  I’ve upgraded the system with very respectable components.  Instead of buying a new system, my system just kept evolving.  It was alot of fun to do and my system will still be plenty for me for 5 more years.  Don’t trash ‘em upgrade ‘em.

  13. Is there a source that can tell how much a particular desktop can be modified and upgraded?  I found that my e-machine (Gateway), could go from 512MB to 2GB RAM.  Though small by today’s standards, it really made a difference in the speed of most operations.

I want to know where to ask (reliably!), about my specific system’s “max” potential for any other upgrades before considering a new system.

  15. Truly said… Desktop computers are evolving a lot in their size and functionality

  17. Desktops will always make the best Gaming machines—though I must admit that High-End Laptops are better than ever, and closer to Desktop specs. than I thought they could get.

No doubt that Desktops will never die because they have more room to handle Extremely Powerful hardware that just can’t fit into a Laptop.  Well, okay, maybe in 30 years components will be so small that a cell phone can out-perform both - but until then the Desktop rules as being more powerful and upgrade-able.

4 MegaBytes of main system RAM is still hefty for most users today, but the games of the future will take advantage of the 8MB - 16MB limits of most motherboards before we know it.  Shoveling out the ca$h for 16MB right now wouldn’t make sense for most people, but I do recommend 8MB as that’s what I’m running and the upgrade isn’t too expensive.

The average size of todays Desktop is actually perfect.  Any smaller would make them hard to upgrade and repair.

    Live long Desktop!

  19. One of the best productivity features ever for the desktop is the ability to run multiple monitors. Combined with a quad, hex or soon octo- core CPU and a video card capable of running 3 monitors and you have a tremendous multi-tasking machine. Add a nice full sized keyboard and mouse and comfort while using this expanded desktop real estate becomes an obvious result.

While laptops can drive an extra monitor, it is impractical to have it permanently attached. You can use an external keyboard and mouse on a laptop but again impractical. You can add an external drive to a laptop but only in a very few cases can you add an INTERNAL one.

  21. Yes a desktop still has its place, especially for larger screen and central area processing, but my laptop has portable office ability. I would give up my desktop any day.

  25. Yes it is true that laptops have overtaken desktops in terms of sales. Soon tablets will overtake laptop sales when the prices come down to ‘reasonable’ levels.  Mesh Computers went into administration this week as a result of these trends.

Normal users can now do as much, as fast on a laptop as on a PC and because laptops are so cheap now, if your laptop goes seriously tits up, you can just chuck it away and get a new one.

There are even gaming laptops around now, such as the old Dell XPS 1730 and of course Alienware laptops.

So is there even a market PCs now? Well yes just about. A lot of people prefer PCs because you still get more bang for your buck with a PC, and it is easier and cheaper to repair and upgrade. It is also much easier to cool, so the highest performing machines will still be PCs. So if you need the highest performing machine for the best value, get a high spec PC with a core i7 cpu, dual crossfire (not sli) linked graphics cards with at least 1GB DDR3 RAM each and 8GB DDR3 RAM.

  27. I more likely to use desktop than laptop in term of speed, however laptop is easy to go on travel. If I have extra money sure I will get both, but for now I only can use laptop.

  29. I think the best way to go is a Macbook for portable laptop use and a Desktop PC for home gaming. That is if you can afford that setup!

  33. I really prefer desktop as my home-office workstation. Though I’m not playing some high end gaming applications and even using multimedia software tools still I chose desktop for the convenience and reliable performance. I’m glad that I found this article and really enjoy reading it with its clear discussion about desktop and the detailed hardware specifications for possible upgrades as well. Thanks.

  39. I am running Linux Mint Debian on both this laptop and my desktop machine, the desktop has a quad core AMD processor and an Asus mobo, 8 gig of ram into a 1 gig video card. Linux flies. I have dual monitors and have opened 8 desktops with 8 different programs one mouse click apart running and nothing is slow. I have been running Linux since 2001 without a single virus, spyware or malware problem what so ever..Like I said earlier, I only like M$ BECAUSE IT MAKES ME MONEY REMOVING VIRIS’S AND CRAP FROM PEOPLES COMPUTERS AND i USE LINUX LIVE DISKS TO DO THAT..../
