DVD Writing: 6 Tips for that Perfect Burn
For many, DVD writing (or “burning,” as it is commonly called) can end up being an expensive trial and error process, especially when burning video for playback on set-top DVD players. This Tech Tip is intended to eliminate the need to spend that hard earned money in order to achieve that “perfect burn.” Please note, as with many things computer-related, many people hold strong opinions of certain subjects, and this is definitely one of them. This tip simply enumerates what we have found to work for many people. While this Tech Tip deals largely with DVD video playback compatibility, we at Geeks.com encourage you to use your DVD burner responsibly and to observe all copyright laws for the area in which you live.

I sometimes watch avi and other files on my standalone dvd player by way of the following method:
1. I load a CDR/RW/DVDR/RW
2. I launch Nero
3. I select burn DATA to CD/DVD
4. I select the video files
5. I burn the files at low speedI then enter the dvd into my player and, if I’ve burned five files, four of them work perfectly.
I was speaking to a friend and he said there is something wrong with this method - there are much better ways, he said - but I cannot understand what I am doing wrong. If I chose to burn them as a VCD the player automatically allocates a larger file size than the CD will take and burns the CD in about two hours and a half, and on a dvd, I cannot keep multiple video files on my media in this manner.
Please tell me exactly what I am doing and what is so wrong about it?

Hi I have a serious burn issue. Most posts on forums state their DVD’s are not working at all. But mine do, but freezes and ‘glitches’ (The only way I can describe it is when your digital TV loses signal). On my 2 DVD players they work fine, but most of my clients are struggling to play them, they are becoming increasingly concerned. I understand that this could be a compatibility issue but I have tried everything and tried to eliminate what could be causing the issue and there are too many complaints for it not to be an issue or something I’m doing wrong. My projects are always nearly 2 hours + I have had some discs returned that are under 1hr 30. I believe the problem is with my Authoring software but I don’t know what to do about it. I currently use Ulead Movie Factory 3 (Crap I know) I have also used DVD Architect.
I have tried.
1. Changing Media (Cheap and Expensive).
2. Converting to MPEG 2 in my editing software to bypass the conversion process in my authoring software.
3. Lowering bitrate (usually between 5000 and 7000)
4. Leaving plenty of space at the end of a disc.
5. Different DVD burner.
6. Spreading the project over 2 discs.
7. Single and Dual Layer.
8. Changing authoring software.
9. Switching the bitsetting to DVD-ROM.
10. Burning to ISO.I have noticed that if I don’t use chapter points the disc plays fine, although this isn’t thoroughly tested, may have just been a coincidence.
Here are the programs I use.
Editing: Edius & Adobe Prem Pro 2
Authoring: Ulead Movie Factory 3, DVD Architect 5
Burning: Nero 7
DVD Writer: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-215DI’m out of ideas PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!!!!
