Essential gear for the digital nomad

More and more people are working away from the office or home office. And digital nomads are everywhere. They’re traveling and hammering their keyboards in an airport or a hotel. Or, they’re closer to home at a coffee shop, a coworking space, or a library.

You can lead that kind of roaming, working lifestyle and carry with you just about everything you need to be productive. If you’re a seasoned digital nomad or an aspiring one, here are a few of the things that you can use to make your portable computing easier and more complete.

  2. I live in Holland. Country-wide is the KPN-dongle (USB-)supported by the mobile network.
    On laptops it’s possible to do wireless internet with the following speeds:

    HSDPA - speed up to 7,2 Mbps
    HSUPA - speed up to 2 Mbps
    UMTS - speed up to 384 kbps
    EDGE - speed up to 236 kbps
    GPRS - speed up to 52 kbps
    HSUPA - speed up to 2 Mbps

Your tip missed the biggie on power.  I ALWAYS carry an octopus (4-8 outlet grounded, an old surge suppressor is ideal) and a grounding adapter with me.  It’s amazing how readily people will share their outlet if you have the ability to plug in more than just your own machine.  Oh, and it extends your reach, too.  Not a bad thing.

  4. I enjoyed your article since there are times when I must travel with my laptop and gear. I like to keep a thin, inexpensive mousepad in my bag in case the surface I am working on is sticky or uneven (tiles are awful!). I also carry a portable numeric keypad with me in case I need to crunch a bunch of numbers.

  6. I’n not fully nomadic (just yet) but I have found the MoGo Bluetooth mice to be a must have accessory. These little mice slide into your PCMCIA or ExpressCard slot when not in use and recharge when inserted. The battery life is wonderful and the bluetooth range is amazing. It’s one less device I have to find a pouch for or worry about recharging.

  10. This is great list, thanks for the post. A couple of other things that should considered are a clipboard, for those times when your world requires an analog perspective and flat space to write (courtesy of Andy Sernovitz) and a powerstrip to befriend everyone else in the coffee shop wanting those two power outlets.
