Ubuntu is arguably the most popular Linux distribution available. It’s solid, stable, and well packaged. On top of that, the developers have made some good calls about the software that they package with Ubuntu.

There’s a lot of software for Ubuntu (and other Linux distributions). A lot of it’s good, some of it’s OK, and there are a few duds. But the five applications that this TechTip covers are great additions to anyone’s installation of Ubuntu.

  1. Exceptional collection and one I will be using and have already shared at Twitter, FriendFeed, cliKball and Del.icio.us.

I could really use a specific answer to a specific related question.

What we need is a way to have separate copies of FireFox on one computer running Ubuntu so each copy can remain logged into a separate account on the same site (Yahoo, Google, Twitter, FriendFeed, WordPress, etc.). Let me elaborate.

Let’s say you have four blogs. Each one has an account on a multitude of sites such as MyBlogLog, Twitter, FriendFeed, WordPress, and so on. To take full advantage of many things - the Avatars in MyBlogLog widgets for example - you must be logged into the right account.

Unfortunately that is NOT as simple as we would like. Log into a different gmail account and Google switches EVERYTHING Google. Sign into a client’s Yahoo store and MyBlogLog switches which Gravatar and identity it displays when you visit blogs. Even if you log out many sites default to your last log-in.

Do you know of any current way to run different copies of FireFox in Ubuntu - perhaps in separate desks so you can quickly switch between them?

Other browsers lack capability I regularly use. Prism has limitations, especially regarding opening new tabs. Desks currently share FireFox. There are apps for managing multiple Twitter accounts but that doesn’t cover all other log-ins.

I sincerely hope you or one of your readers has a brilliant solution!

  3. Instead of installing yet another app, the first time I needed the terminal I just dragged its icon into the bottom panel.  Now I can get a terminal window with a click.  But then I’m hopelessly uncool; I don’t Twitter and I’ve never felt a need for an app to help me manage dozens of open Firefox tabs, because I rarely have more than four open at once.

  5. I use dropbox instead of Ubuntu One. No invitation required and is cross platform.  Handy when your work computer is Windows.

Also Tilda works the same as the Guake terminal and ought to be mentioned too.

As for essential… meh.  I find Adobe Air, 64bit flash, 64 bit google gears, and Amarok to be ESSENTIAL.  But your article is informative nonetheless.

    Cheers,

  7. Come on guys, FireFox is slow???? Compared to IE it is lightening speed and so much more stable. Epithany must be Warp 2.

Thumbs up on anything Linux. I use Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty and I love it over my xp system (which I only use to run AS400 apps on).
