The Web has become an integral part of the lives of millions of people, and not just for browsing or shopping for computer parts, either. More and more people are using Web applications for a variety of tasks.

There are Web applications for doing just about everything. You can create documents, balance your books, invoice customers and clients, keep track of tasks, plan events and much more. One area in which Web application developers are really pushing the boundaries is storing and sharing files. And why not? The Web is just a big collection of servers with big hard drives. With the price of hard drives dropping, it’s easy and fairly inexpensive to add more storage.

  1. I use Carbonite.com for on-line (off-site) backup. There is no limit on how much you can store for $54.95 for a year for each system. It has provided much security of files and picture that I don’t want to lose. I have done restore operations on two crashed systems and been able to fully recovery my backed up files.

  3. Good article!  Of late I have been using SkyDrive, they give you 25GB for Free, and they have drag and drop functionality (if you use Internet Explorer).

Just another option among many.  My concern is usually about how long it will last.  I’m thinking Microsoft will keep this alive for a while.
    Thanks!

  9. Why not just buy an external hard drive and back up right at your own computer?

  11. ...one issue you didn’t address is that the likelyhood of any or all of these on-line storage providers going “belly-up”.  If these companies come and go as a lot do, what then happens to your data?  Will it be destroyed?  Will you have a chance to retrieve it?  Will it be handed to some other entity?
    Just something else to ponder…

  13. I still prefer using an external hard drive as means of backup and only use online services when I need to send someone a large file. I find it easier that way, because I’ve been in a situation when I needed my files and had no internet connection available.
