In this week’s Tech Tip we’ll look at some common “techy” misconceptions that we’d like to dispel with “Geek Busters!” - sending myths into hiatus! Without further preamble, I give you our items for this week’s Tech Tip Geek Busters!

#1 Facebook wants to charge you money for its service
It seems like a week doesn’t go by that the rumor mill churns yet again that Facebook wants to charge you some kind of fee for its service. Basically, put them out to pasture - Zuckerberg and company loves your information that we all (maybe too) freely give out to want to charge us for the privilege of paying him to give it. So, feel free to grouse about the latest changes to the format but know that for now and into the foreseeable future, The Facebook is content to just be happy mining YOUR data.

  1. Dell does not manufacture their own computers; but they do manufacture some of their own parts. I personally will never use a dell computer again after I tried to replace my power supply; learning that I could only get my computer fully functional again if I bought the one manufactured by dell which costed 2x the price of the one I got. So I now have to live with a computer that has no turn on indicator lights because of their “OEM” bull crap.

  3. Under #2, the earlier build-your-own computer mentioned is the MITS Altair 8800, there was no “Alter”.

  5. That should have read “Altair” instead of “Alter”!
The Altair 8800 was the first truly Portable Computer that could do real work. Ed Roberts and his team developed the S-100 bus, which gained stature by being recognized by the IEEE.
Dozens, or more, companies sprang up due to their offerings. Companies like Godbout, Oliver Audio Engineering, SWTPC, Pickles & Trout, Cromemco and many more names that have disappeared in the dust.
It was amazing to see what could be done with under 64k (that’s kilobytes!) of memory.

  7. Don’t let Apple snow you with their claim of having “invented” the word, or term, “App”.
I have documentation that shows the term being used by Texas Instruments for their TI-84 many years ago!

  9. To #1: it is worse than many think. See: http://www.webpronews.com/is-facebook-tracking-everywhere-you-go-online-2011-09

To #2: $666.66. That is all you need to know. grin Computers are like cars. They all are made from parts and/or sub-subassemblies by 10 or so manufacturers.
However, that is not to say that some demand that better sub-subassemblies are not specified by certain manufacturers.

To #3 It can ruin your computer unless caution is used. Nvidia network addapter has caused several of my systems to loose connectivity permenantly. Rulling back the update does not always recover operability. Most updates are the right thing to do but some Third Party updates from the Windows Updates are deadly to systems. The old rule of “if it isn’t broke does do not fix it” often applies.

To #4 Read “To #2” again.

Thanks for providing tech tips as they are usually supperb.

    John

  11. Before Alter etc. was a computer from a company with a name similar to Boston Scientific and it was from Mass. It had a chip in it that was from Texas Instruments that was almost the size of a Hershey bar. Never took off, Also their was the Sphere from a group in Utah.

  33. As long as part Mark Zuckerberg obtain your personal data, there will be no charge. Geesh, he’s worth 13 billions…

For the part about computer, When you bought a Apple, Sony then you only buy the brand not the quality anymore...Last year, Asus, was number 1 in term of 3 years without repair.

Build your own computer is awesome. Easy and save money.
