In a previous TechTip, we presented a few techniques that allow Windows users of Skype (a popular Web telephony service) to improve the quality of their audio. As with Windows, the quality of the calls under Linux widely varies. There are the ever present problems with echoes, sound delays, the sound dropping out, and problems like that.

  1. The quality of Skype audio on calls between my son in England and myself in Maine - both using Mac laptops - is terrible - filled with delays, echoes, and odd sounds. I look forward to a TechTip that addresses techniques to improve the audio on Macs. Thanks.

  5. Nice work. Linux has become the best desktop option for most users, the majority just don’t know it yet. Articles like this one will help bring that option to light.

  7. @ Max - (from Seagate)

    THE STORAGE INDUSTRY HAS 2 STANDARDS FOR MEASURING CAPACITY - BINARY & DECIMAL

    BINARY = 1024 MB = 1 GIGABYTE
    DECIMAL = 1000 MB = 1 GIGABYTE

    BINARY - (2^1 = 2, 2^2 = 4, 2^2 = 8, ETC.)

    2 TO THE 30TH POWER = 1,073,741,824 BYTES (1 GIGABYTE)

    DECIMAL - (10^1 =10, 10^2 =100, 10^3 =1000, ETC.)

    10 TO THE 9TH POWER = 1,000,000,000 BYTES (1 GIGABYTE)

    THESE TWO MEASUREMENTS ARE EQUAL WHEN REFERRING TO
    STORAGE SIZE

    SO 2 TO THE 30TH POWER = 1,073,741,824 BYTES (1 GIGABYTE)

    IF WE MULTIPLY 1,073,741,824 BY 698(WHAT WINDOWS XP RECOGNIZES), WE GET
    749,471,793,152 BYTES - THIS IS BINARY SO WE MUST
    CONVERT IT BACK TO DECIMAL SO
    749,471,793,152 DIVIDED BY 1000 = 750 GB

    SO REALLY 698 GB IN BINARY EQUALS 750 GB IN DECIMAL

    UNFORTUNATELY, HARD DRIVE COMPANIES PREFER TO ADVERTISE CAPACITIES IN
    THE DECIMAL STANDARD.

  13. Skype has a Beta 2.0 download for Linux with webcam support.

    http://www.skype.com/intl/en/download/skype/linux/beta/

    Still trying to get my microphone to work with Ubuntu, but probably will just give up and get a headset.
