Improving Your Google Searches

While Google is a great search engine, you’ve probably noticed that when you do a search, Google usually returns more results that you can comfortably chew. But how can you limit Google’s search results?

Many people know the trick of enclosing a search query in quotes, and some may know about putting a plus sign (+) in front of a search term. But, there’s more that you can do. There are a number of really simple techniques for improving your Google searches so that the results better focus on the information that you want.

  3. I love the tip.  It is great to be able to narrow the search as when 14,000 entries come up, and only 2 per page are what you want, it makes it quite discouraging.

I’ve done tutorials and such on Google products for people I work with, and I spotted a mistake in your “tips” section.  If you put tips OR linux OR “windows vista,” you’ll get anything with any of those 3 search terms.  You need to put tips linux OR “windows vista” in order to get tips for either OS.  Otherwise, though, good job!

  9. entries with Boolean AND Linux AND “Windows Vista” = 60,200,000
    or entries with +Linux+"Windows Vista” = 58,900,000
    gives you the number of results in google

    Boolean in achaic, google recommends +

    any way to streamline search like for “Helen”
    history>greek>troy>helen ????

    or cooking>salad>spinach ???
