When it comes to electronics, some people just want something that’s smaller and simpler. From barebones MP3/MP4 players to netbooks to basic point-and-shoot digital cameras, more and more people seem to be demanding less from their gadgets.

One area in which this drive towards simplicity and compactness has really taken off is digital video. Gone are the days of bulky digital camcorders. You can now carry a powerful digital video camera in your pocket.

Welcome to the world of the flip cam, a gadget that’s changing the way millions of people look at recording video.

  1. I bought a Flip HD on sale from Amazon about 2 months ago.  I have only used it a few times so far but, I find it quite adequate for many every-day uses.  The MP4 format output is actually quite good.  And I am very picky when it comes to video (and sound) quality.  No, it is not pristine professional quality; nor does it quite measure up to the more expensive handheld camcorders.  But, unless you need really great quality, this is a great little device for the price.  My friends have had fun making some great videos for Youtube.  I went to an open house party a couple weeks ago and filmed several of the songs played by the live band (surf music).  I turned it into a cool DVD using iDVD on my MacBook.  Great stuff!

  3. If I understand what the author is saying about the flip cams, I say, whats the point.  There are plenty of < $100 digital cameras (Ref: geeks.com) with high resolution and the ability to record video without all of the thrills, SD card input and tripod mount.

    What say ye?

  5. Was this supposed to be anything more than a commercial for the FLIP? It’s okay, but the creative has it beat, hands down.

  7. ”...I’ve seen people get up and running with a flip cam within two or three minutes; less if they’ve read the documentation. ...” Sure, but you’ve spent 10 minutes trying to find your magnifying glasses to read the “nano-print” documentation.

  11. I really don’t understand why people want to spend $199 for such a thing, while the same money can easily buy a full featured camcorder, and most cell phones can already do what these “flip cams” do.  I guess us Americans are still too wealthy to rarely think about cost-effectiveness.

  13. Haha, this is a decent camera. These will fade out just like flip phones. I wonder what idea they will come out next with?
