Learning Languages: Online
Learning a foreign language seems to be on the to do list of a lot of people. And their reasons for learning a language are as varied as the languages many of them want to study.
While there’s no denying that being able to speak a foreign tongue is beneficial, would-be language learners often run into a few obstacles. They might not have time to attend formal or informal classes. They might not be able to afford language tutoring. Or classes for the languages they want to learn might not be available where they live.

Boy, do you guys have it wrong on the Foreign Services Website. Language training is only available to State Dept. employees and their immediate families, via secured Intranet.
Please check your resources before you tell me I can learn a language for free somewhere.
I have included copied/pasted information from the course page below. I had to cut out some of it due to YOUR space limitations.Who Can Take Courses?
The Foreign Service Institute (FSI) is committed to making learning available at a time and place convenient to the learner. Distance learning is available at no cost to Department of State employees and their eligible family members through two primary means: 1) the FasTrac program, and 2) FSI-developed distance learning courses using text-based, CD-ROM, or online delivery methods. FSI-developed distance learning courses are available to EFMs of other foreign affairs agencies, on a reimbursable basis. Once registered for an online course, you may access it from home or office by the Internet through the FSI Learn Center. Distance learning is a convenient and highly personalized way to learn.FasTrac (Foreign Service Institute)
The FasTrac Distance Learning Program offers over 3,000 internet-based, self-directed courses that can be accessed from home or work. Course topics address a vast range of business, computer technology, leadership and management, and professional development skills. All Department of State Eligible Family Members (domestic or overseas) are eligible to participate free of charge in the FasTrac program. A single FasTrac Logon ID/Password (that’s just one DS-755 completed online!) allows a student access to thousands of courses. Once enrolled, the password may be used for one year to access the FSI learning management system. All FasTrac completions will be added to the student’s official FSI training record.Distance Language Learning (Foreign Service Institute)
The FSI School of Language Studies (FSI/SLS) has an extensive and growing menu of online language learning courses available to Eligible Family Members who are 18 years of age or older on overseas orders. Courses include:School of Applied Information Technology - SAIT (Foreign Service Institute)
The FSI School of Applied Information Technology (FSI/SAIT) utilizes the information technology (IT) courses within the FasTrac program as either an enhancement or as strongly recommended pre-requisites for traditional classroom courses. In cases where industry-standard certifications are available, SAIT will substitute the FasTrac course for the corresponding classroom course. Additionally, SAIT recommends the distance learning courses as a valuable study aid for the industry-standard certification exams. Courses are available to support 23 different professional certifications for IT professionals. For more information on the SAIT Distance Learning program, visit the Intranet Website.

Did you follow the link in the article clearly marked “FSI Language Courses” (http://www.fsi-language-courses.com/) or did you just jump to a totally wrong conclusion by seeing the first link in that paragraph?
The “FSI Language Courses” link worked for me AND I could download the MP3s and textbooks.
Sorry guys, what is USAID? I’ve searched in acronymserach and it told me USAID is U.S. Agency for International Development. Is that right?
I have always wanted to learn Fokien or Chinese but there is no time I can squeeze that in my already hectic schedule. Thanks and I can so relate in this topic.
My cousin is actually leaving today to spend 10 months at a university in Tokyo. My advice to her? Take photos of important things like food, toilets, beds, supermarkets etc etc and if you can’t convey what you want through words, just show them the photo!
Good Post thank You
You can simply see the difficulty that can happen. When you begin thrifty on the price with computer and mobile services. Thanks
It’s always good to learn a new language and expand your vocabulary. Surely there are many new things which you can get from the new language, even new culture and many new peoples. It requires much time and the most important thing is practice. For this there is only one thing required which never make yourself to give up.
Wow… very nice i’ll wait your next update to visit back here
