PDFs on the Cheap in Windows

Posted by on 01/21 at 10:29 AM

The Portable Document Format (PDF), created by Adobe Systems has become a popular way to exchange and print documents. You see PDFs just about everywhere—on the Web, included with the software you buy, and even the documents sent to commercial printers. It’s easy to understand the popularity of PDF because they maintain the formatting—the layout, images, fonts, and more—of the original document.

Conventional wisdom says that you need Adobe Acrobat to be able to create PDF files in Windows. With a $299 price tag, Acrobat is a little pricey for the average user. It also packs more features than most of us will ever use.

Anyway, you don’t need to spend that kind of money to create and manipulate PDFs. You can do it cheaply, and even for free. Curious? Then keep reading.

  1. Gee!  I have a Mac and if I click on print there is the option of saving, faxing, mailing, compressing, or encrypting as a PDF.  Of course this makes for a shorter tech tip.

  9. In your very nice “Tech Tip 110 - PDFs on the Cheap in Windows” you overlooked mentioning the very good PDF output ability of WordPerfect.  I haven’t used it that much, but for the times I did it gave me excellent results.  And it’s had this capability for several years, at least from WordPerfect 9 in WordPerfect Office 2000.  (The PDF writer I use most often is PDFCreator, and that’s for saving web pages most of the time. I’m quite pleased with it.)

  15. Thanks for the article.  I’ve used a product for years called PDF995.  It also installs as printer and has worked flawlessly.  They also have toolsets for manipulating PDF’s.  They have an advanced version for sale but the free version works fine.  The only thing that happens is when you print, it pops up an add for their software.

  17. Here is how to enhance PDF file generation with OOo, or OpenOffice.org:  use the free extendedPDF at http://www.3bview.com/epdf-home.html

This free program retains all hyperlinks in OOo documents, and more.

If you want more information about extendedPDF and the features of each Edition then please read the extendedPDF User Guide, here:  http://www.3bview.com/downloads/extendedPDF-User-Guide.pdf

  19. Good article on creating .pdf cheap on Windows.  I must say I had to laugh though.  If you have a Mac with OS X.x.x you can ask it to print>choose PDF>choose Save as PDF file>choose location.

You are now done.  End of my article on creating PDF on the Cheap, MacIntosh.

( The Designers of Techtips would have to agree with you there Robert! )

  21. Open Office also has the ability to export any document it has loaded as a PDF. And it is free unlike Microsoft Office.

  23. PDF Redirect is also a free powerful PDF creating software installed as a printer driver.  You can append to any PDF file in front or back of the original file.  No nasty ad or banners.

  37. Adobe PDF files look exactly like original documents and preserve source file information — text, drawings, 3D, full-color graphics, photos, and even business logic — regardless of the application used to create them.
