  1. Why didn’t you mention eSATA?  Although it is unlikely that you have an old SATA drive to put in the enclosure it is possible.  I find eSata w/Acronis software is very fast: approx 35 minutes vs. 2+ hours on USB or firewire.

  5. Reuse of the drive is a great idea and like you say will keep your data safe. I would say however ensure if you are recycling the rest of the machine make sure it is done through a reputable recycling company.

  7. Great article!

Since 2002, my company has donated almost 500 tons of computer equipment to a non-profit in St. Louis… http://www.witsinc.org

They are a great organization and recycle 100% of the equipment.

I have also kept a few and use them around the house.

One unit sits in my sons room as his personal Spongebob server (No kidding!).  A simple P4 running XP and a used monitor on the wall and he is one happy 2 year old!

Another unit runs our little surveillance system.

And another is our home server.

They may be “old”, but they do their jobs well.

  9. Buying an external drive bay was one of the best investments I have ever made. It is great to use these older drives for either backup or to store misc. files.
