  1. I have published 23 books with lulu and eight with Create Space. So far Sales have not made me rich and famous but I still try my best by advertising them to the world who knows some day I may strike it rich.

  3. In response to your warm and fuzzy upside regarding self-publishing, I’m curious as to why you fail to roll it over to reveal the vulnerable downside.

A few years back I encouraged my father to self-publish his novel. Though already a published author of textbooks for major houses he had no name in the novel market. I’d read a blurb in the San Francisco Chronicle about a company called i-Universe that published any novel for $99. He bit. I bit. And he got bit back--hard.

His total outlay was in the thousands; he had no guidance--despite the fanfare--about marketing the book. And all the copies he purchased to send to publishers and resellers (at a grossly inflated per book rate) have made their way to the discount bin. And this wasn’t a coughed-up rag but a scrupulously-researched and well-written book.

The lesson learned was this: publishers and booksellers rarely if ever peruse self-published books. They deal with agents, and agents--like self-pub book projects--cost more money than you ever expect at the outset.

Face it: the self-publishing companies make their coin selling books on cheap paper for more than they would ever bring in the marketplace TO THE AUTHOR. And after every bookseller and publisher in America has been mailed a free copy that will never be read, the remaining inventory will lie in corrugated boxes in the garage, till mold or rats mercy-kill the dream.

  9. I feel sorry for your father but if he had gone to lulu or Create Space (Amazon subsidiary) It would have cost him nothing to publish. I have done just that and My book Pasha The Greek has sold like hot cakes. On lulu I have sold 53 downloads and print items in the last month and I have converted 17 of my boons to E books and one to hard cover which will widen my scope. Out of pocket $0.00.
