The third revision to the Serial ATA storage standard, known as Serial ATA 6Gb/s, was ratified a year ago and an increasing number of devices are coming to market that make use of the new technology.

In this Tech Tip I’ll go over what you need to know to decide when the right time is for you to upgrade.

  3. 6GB/Sec???? Come on really now! What are we supposed to connect to that? The fastest top dollar SSDs can only sustain a 250-300MB/Sec read and can write only half of that. A 10,000RPM hard disk with a 32MB cache will give you a 32MB burst of speed for a few milliseconds then drop back to 125MB/sec sustained and that’s on the outer most edges of the disk. The sustained read or write speed decreases in a linear fashion as you spiral inward. Try this: Plug an eSATA bracket plug into an old SATA 1.5 port and transfer a 10GB folder from an eSATA external hard drive to that old machines desktop and time it. Do the same exact thing on a “NEW” and I’m sure costly SATA IO 6GB/Sec port machine or I/O Card. Guess what? It’s not going to magically make devices faster. SATA 1.5GB/Sec is already faster then anything they have to stick into it! Same thing with the “NEW” USB 3.0, Useless again. Unless you plan on buying a dozen $7500 DDR3 2000 64GB server RAM Drives and run them in RAID 0 you can hold off on the SATA IO for another decade or so. If you are building a new i7-980 6 core you may as well get a good motherboard that will already have them. I can see it now 1000’s of early adopters with their Semperon rig O’Clocked to 2.0GHz with W/9 case fans on their way to the computer store to buy the new 6GB/sec SATA IO Card to wedge in between 9 yr old 64MB AGP video card and their neon green illuminated Liquid cooling unit! I just wish they had an I/O device that could use the original 1.5GB SATA ports to their full capacity! They don’t have their wagon in front of the horse, The horse died and the’re pushing the wagon when it comes to IO device speeds. Am I the only person on earth that noticed this? They keep trying to sell people the same junk for more money. The only difference between the $2 USB 2.0 cable and the $35 USB 3.0 Cable is they twisted the pairs! USB 3.0 was originally supposed to have a fiber optic cable integrated, I guess they are saving that for USB 4.0! I guess the people comming up with these scemes pay all the technical writers pretty good to rave about the bright shiney new toy’s that are the same worthless thing with a new acronym, increment and a paint job! Useless! Also, When will they stop it already with the PS2 ports? I wish they died with the Microchannel Architecture they road in on in ‘87 or whenever it was! AAAHHHHGggggg!!!Sorry for the Rant. LOL

  5. I would like to see something of using skype and what equipment I would purchase to take over computer to a foreign country and how to use it. The service sounds interesting to me and would really like to learn how to use it.

  7. I thank you for these technical updates, they keep me abreast of the coming advances in the future. I am tech that builds computers to meet a customers specifications. Knowing of coming advances gives me the info to build superior systems.

  13. I have a new technology that I just released from my secrete labratory in a hollowed out mountian for the early adopters! It’s USB 7.0! 4.9 Exabits a sescond! I just spray painted the USB 2.0 cables red to make them look fast. Cables are only $199 + S/H and matching adapter cards are only $750. There is nothing you can plug into it to utilize the transfer speed just like the inferior USB 3.0 so no computer illiterate people will never know. They won’t even believe it when someone with a Deans List BS in CS tells them it’s useless. Invest now before USB 14.0 comes out. That will really make your 100MB/Sec max sustained transfer devices really go 100MB/sec max! My next release is the Lightning wire, 1000 times faster then FireWire! I just spray painted them too. If you have to ask how much that will be you can’t afford it! LMAO
