Should I Upgrade My Web Browser?
The car I drive is a beautiful bright yellow Mustang convertible with big bold racing stripes, while the car that my neighbor drives is a small, economical silver Toyota Prius. While the cars will get you from point A to B with no problems, they do it in different ways. The Mustang looks “cool”, it drives “cool” and it gets you to point B in “cool” while the Prius drives solid, is an engineering marvel and gets you from point A to B with quiet, fuel efficient “coolness.” Internet browsers are very much the same, they (for the most part) will get you from point A to B – but how you arrive can be totally different factors of cool.
While a lot of this Tip may be more subjective than objective, it will give you a good idea of different ways to arrive at point B (so to speak) with your internet browser.

I’m sure I won’t be the only person reminding you about Opera. I’ve used Opera since about version 6 and I’m using 9.64 right now. It has NEVER failed me, and is the fastest - on windows 2000 and ubuntu. I have never had a security problem.
maybe 2 million users worldwide isn’t much, but for me it’s the only browser I care about. And it’s not like I haven’t tried FF. That one is ok.
My heart belongs to Opera.
I have not used IE for many years. Netscape from beginning thru ver 9.0, then discovered the joys of Firefox & Thunderbird!!
Long live Firefox!!
I am running Windows XP64 Professional. I was and still being ask to update to IE 9. I did and now I get the BLUE screen of death everytime I boot up IE 9. I am now using Mozilla Firefox which ment that I had to learn a new system, but it works as well as MS’s IE. I also tryed to delete MS IE9. It will not dissapear.
WHat about that great Browser called Avant--I have used firefox and explorer and opera-- Avant is the best for me—and you didnt even mention it?
This was a good Tech Tip,I’ve tried many Browsers in the last 20 years an have always came back to IE.number 7 is my favorite so far.I have no use for any Google products.I use a Internet Eraser and it does’nt bother IE 7 when I use it.I keep my PC’s clean I have manual controll of everything in my PC.Any program that tells me I can’t use Ad-aware removal or erasers.I don’t want on my PC’s.I make the decisions what I want and don’t want. Not some program makers. But hey don’t go by my opion Try it for yourself. If you want controll of your Pc or be led by the hand and told how to use your PC.you already know my answer.......Thanks......Joe
Excellent short overview of some alternative browsers and IE in general. I have noticed that IE8 does have some problems in rendering certain sites. Not sure why yet, but I use all these listed and others (like Netscape - no longer made or supported, but still awesome to use version 7 or later).
P.S. My preference has been Firefox and SeaMonkey by Mozzila.org. These are nice standards based browsers and have excellent addon features to really add value to your experience and safety. IE 8 is finally doing the same, though still behind the times. I do like Microsoft products in general, as well as many others.
Have a wonderful day.
If you pull this crap and spam me with another opinionated load of BS again, You’ll lose me as a customer and a subscriber. You lost 100% of your credibility with the term “Internet Exploder”. Don’t like it? Don’t use it, but don’t thrust your opinion on others. You just sound like an idiot.
Btw, I’m a 100% firefox user.
As I was reading this article, (using CHROME),I have been using at least 4 different browsers for years. The well taken point that some do what others don’t was my main reason for “trying” something else.
My new favorite is CHROME but it still is a work in progress. Much faster than IE and even Firefox.
There still will be others (browsers) released in the future so only time will tell what new a exciting ways to surf the web come around.Haven’t seen any comparisons with FF3.09., but reports say faster loading and surfing than FF3.01, but some observers can’t tell ant difference.
If using Spybot S & D, turn OFF immunization. or you’ll be waiting forever for IE8 to load.
IE8 doesn’t play well with 3rd party add-ons yet. (toolbars etc.)
As usual with MS, it looks good on paper until you try to really use it. I’m giving it 3-6 months. Maybe SP2 before I give it a workout
The problem is that more and more commerce and data is generated using specific proprietary packages. IBM’s Websphere isn’t compatible with IE 7’s multiple tabs, although Firefox is. Companies are forced into using non-standard packages and uniformity goes out the window for software standardization.
From people like me, with no idea about computers thank you very much. This was very helpful. I had no idea I could have more browser on my computer.
Have used Mozilla Firefox for over pass year its great. So far no problems.
Thank you all for your positive comments. While I did specifically mention that this Tech Tip was more subjective than objective (something lost on commenter #7 above), I hope that I did get across the points that there are some very good, innovative browser alternatives out there and that they can actually be run at the same time of the same machine (I find that there is a misconception among some computer users that you need to unstall one browser before installing another). For some specific things:
#3 - I ran into this issue with an old P4 system I was running. Microsoft does have a “Microsoft Fix it” for unloading IE8, but you may just need to go back to an earlier restore point on the computer to “undo” IE8.
See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700#4 - Unfortunately there just wasn’t the space to cover all the browsers available, which is why I did include the Wikipedia link.
#6 - Microsoft is aware of the issue of some sites not rendering correctly, so they did inclued a useful “compatibility” button on the browser URL address bar. If you are running IE8 and having issues seeing a page correctly, this button may help (as would perhaps taking a look at the page with another browser).
#10 - “Companies are forced into using non-standard packages and uniformity goes out the window for software standardization.” I couldn’t agree more with this comment! It is interesting that the latest alpha release of Opera actually tried to cover every single standard out there.
I tried all the above when looking for an upgrade from tried and true Netscape 7.2 which had outlived it’s usefulness. I’d been used to having one application for all my internet needs. Browser, E-Mail client, Internet Chat, Web Composer, etc. in one package. I found SeaMonkey and have been totally satisfied. It’s essentially a state of the art implementation of the Netscape Communicator (Mozilla) suite. Anyone looking for an integrated internet solution should try SeaMonkey.
I got all of the browsers except Mozilla. I found Opera. One not mentioned to be the fastest. How ever, it will not play every flash player. Had Mozilla before. I’m still wondering if I want use it again. Opera has a web page drag and drop feature to make little windows of the web pages you must frequently sufr. I’m to be able to quickly click on and view. Cuts down surfing time. And unlike the Internet Explorer, you can change the color or personality of the browser.
The google Chrome Browser is also another quick page. But very basic use.
I found the Safari Browser to be too busy.
Some thoughts on the Mozzila Browser. What I did like about it was the different skins for it. Mozilla had other features that did not work out so well. For instance, their silver light type features did not work well. You could not drag parts of the page to make a unnecessary PDF file. Making a PDF file from web pages was kinda silly. It did not work anyway. A useless feature. But I like the different color combinations. I to make the browser look unique. However, with add on colors the Browsers regular menu features get lost and you can not find the operation buttons to access the downloaded applications, or bookmark features of the browser. They get lost. So one could barely access menus on the browser. Making it kinda useless. But I did so like the new look of the browsers once I changed the colors. I find Internet explorer quite boring.
Another thing. When using Mozilla, I could not get rid of a feature I added. Even if I uninstalled and reinstalled it. So, I was stuck with it. I had 4 weather reports on it. And I still could not find the menu. It disappeared. What a bummer!
I am having a problen turning off my desk top computer which has windows XP service pack 3 installed. when going to start then to turn off it takes two tries before it shut down? any ideas?
ThanksWhoa, number 16 really doesn’t get the point of this particular blog. Maybe reading the above posts will give him a clue.
