So You Want To Be a Tech “Insider”
First and foremost, you need a good foundation. For myself, for some disturbing reason only my subconscious can answer, I have a deep and unabated interest in all things electric – but particularly computers. More than likely, if you’re reading this Tech Tip, you probably have such an interest too. If you are looking for something that’ll give you a good background in computer components, I’d recommend the book Upgrading and Repairing PCs by Scott Mueller (QUE Publishing).
You’ll learn more than you ever wanted to about the ins and outs of computers and how they and their components work. You’ll also pick up many of the building blocks needed to catapult you into computer stardom. You can pick up a book directly from the publisher or, of course from Amazon. For those of you who want to try before you buy, you can take a look at portions of the 15th edition of the book (it is up to the 18th edition now) on Google Books Search.

SEEMS MORE LIKE AN ADVERTIESMENT TO SELL BOOKS. I HAVE 3 DIFFERENT TYPES OF COMPUTER SCIENCE DEGRESS. TOOK FIRST PROGRAMMING CLASS AT 18 AM 43 NOW. I FOUND ZERO USEFULL INFO IN THE TIP AND NO TECHNICAL INFO AT ALL.
EXCELLENT info and resources!! Thanks Geeks!
All of this is good advice! The BEST thing to do after reading a few books and blogs, however, is to get an old computer and take it apart. Look for what’s wrong, and try to find out why it went “feet-up.”
Even if all you do is look at the parts that helps, but if you can get it running again, so much the better. Book learnin’ is fine, but you ain’t a geek until you DO GEEK.
Thank you everyone for your comments. We always appreciate and encourage them - even if they didn’t particularly like the Tech Tip. As for specifics questions raised:
1) Thank you for your feedback - though I’d like to point out I actually only recommneded one book. I checked and it is one which Geeks.com doesn’t, nor has ever sold. I simply recommended that book because of it’s great insider information it gives to the ins and outs of a computer system.
2) Thank you for your feedback as well.
3) Thank you for you feedback and this terrific additional tip. I’d highly recommend doing just this, you get to see many of the parts in person, and it gives you a good hands-on experience.
