Taking your computing wherever you go usually means carrying a notebook computer, a PDA, or a smart phone like the BlackBerry Pearl. But, you really don’t need anything that big to compute on the go. All you need is a USB flash drive (also called a USB key or a USB thumb drive) and a free set of programs called PortableApps. Then, you can do your work, communicate with friends and family, and more simply by plugging into a computer running Windows.

  1. Scott,

Cool tip!  Brave man, buying a flash drive from Beijing?  I’ve read more than one case of flash drives in sealed containers from China containing trojans : (

  3. Great overview on the emerging popularity of U3 drives and portableapps. It’s still a red-headed stepchild of the business-on-the-road crew, but will catch fire when the manufacturers provide some incentive to write additional applications.

I agree with njaneardude; you are a brave man. You must have had a company expense account. grin

  7. Thank you for an informative article with useful links.

The suites are a good idea because a few other portable apps e.g., available at The Portable Freeware Collection

    http://www.portablefreeware.com

don’t work very well (some can even affect applications already installed on computers), however, at this collection users can post comments including workarounds and alternate apps.

PS When using portable apps, it’s good practice to keep your data in a folder in the flash drive’s root directory rather than using the default locations used by some portable apps, otherwise if you later delete an app, to update for example, your data could be lost.
