It’s been a busy two weeks in tech news for us geeks. With Apple’s WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) and E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo), there’s been a flurry of announcements, demos, and releases with more to look forward to. The thing I’m most excited about is Apple’s iPhone 4™ and in this Tech Tip I’ll tell you some things that should help you decide if the iPhone 4 is right for you.

  3. I may have missed it, however did they mention that you either need to use a non metallic case or hold your new iPhone a certain way so you do not reduce it’s ATT reception capability?

  5. We are finally approaching what was called the unified device in 1986.  It did everything and it was affordable.  Many of the functions seem to be useless, but soon these applicatlions will be used to benefit the medical community, the military and numerous educational instiutions.

Think about what is happening.  In your hand you have a device that will inform, entertain, and protect you.  Oh, did I mention it can also double as a phone?

  7. the iphone will never be for me as long as ATT provides their disservice.  Love Apple, hate AT&T;.

  9. Another ill-fated non-usable article about something that did not tell me anything.
Does it still use the same software?
    Is the software updated?
Do we have to re-buy our old software?
How many programs will the new phone hold? (comparing for US, that do not have a Iphone 3g, ipad, Ipod, blackberry. or any other software mobile pocket device)
Some people are NOW used to TERA-GigaBytes, not plain gigas, which means a Giga-Byte unit is not going to hold any program, such as Adobe-Whatever.
And not to mention, MP3 and Pictures and Movies, AND....
    Can you add-on the memory?
    ???????????

  11. Thanks for pointing out many of the most important pluses and minuses regarding the new iP4.  Personally I have an affinity for the efforts of software pioneers such as Skype, so they would see their icon tapped more frequently than Apple’s FaceTime.  Being an Open Source proponent, I would also like to see full mobile editions of Firefox and the email / calendar Thunderbird / Lightening client.  My biggest concern is the degree that the AT&T;3G and limited coverage 4G networks will be able to handle the onslaught of bandwidth demands.  Everyone remembers the dreadful experience of attendees to the SXSW gathering last spring when the “beefed up” AT&T;network choked. However, I personally can’t endorse jailbreaking as it is only for geeks who treat their technology purchases as a laboratory experiment. I for one expect to hear a dial tone when I pickup a handset not the sound of a slot machine.  This is, once again, a major leap forward.  Kudos to Apple and the incredibly talented pool of truly creative people who bring this type of sophistication to the market.  Just one caution, the higher performance internal antenna is allegedly significantly curtailed if the iP4 is held in the left hand (rumor has it).  Finally, the HP Palm and its WebOS is the REAL multi-tasking champion.  To be conducting a phone call. while the caller and up to five WiFi authorized devices are simultaneously access the web is INCREDIBLE.  Oh, and it really works.  Just food for thought.

  13. I’m not as tech savvy as I would like to be, so I need some help. I have been with Verizon for nearly a decade now for the simple reason that they work where AT&T;and all the other carriers don’t. I travel a lot and still find this to be true most everywhere I go. The iPhone interests me, but I’m not willing to give up my coverage for it. So my question is; how does the iPhone compare with the new Droids from Verizon. I have talked to both and they each make it sound like they’re better....of course. I have heard that Apple is limited due to a “closed end” system, whereas Verizon’s is “open ended”....allowing for more expansion. Is this true? I’m going for the long term here, so if I miss out on some apps now I’m willing to wait since I doubt I’ll use that many anyway. What’s the difference between 3G and 4G and how is it likely to affect me? Can you give me a side-by-side comparison between iPhone and Droid?
    Thank You,
    Michael

  15. Michael:  (1) The coverage is no minor issue to any of us mobile smart phone users.  I personally started with a Handspring / Palm Visor Prism & a Sprint PCS Wireless Web Digital Link and it still rocks.  But I digress.  The only 3G carrier with greater coverage (actually the most) is Cricket who coupled their own CDMA towers with those from Verizon, US Cellular and Sprint.  But the Cricket smart phone choices are scarce.  Next is Verizon which truly has AT&T;resoundingly beat coverage-wise.  However, on AT&T;3G you can talk and data simultaneously which presently you cannot on Verizon.  They both a in the early stages (in people terms that means scant coverage) of rolling out 4G coverage which has more costly monthly plans for the noticeably faster performance.  If you aren’t in a major urban market 4G isn’t relevant today and for the next couple of years.  Lots of handheld smart device changes could occur during that period.  (2) Both the Google Android-based smart phones and the Apple iPhone (virtually compatible with each of the four series thus far) have a gazillion APPS.  Most of the downloaded APPS are “free” and tend to be disused after only a few days.  Apple far and away has the widest available APP offering, but Android is building up steam.  Many of these APPS, on either platform, are or already have been developed for BOTH platforms.  Why, money, power, buzz and because both iPhone OS and Android OS are based on some variation of Mobile Linux.  So, you are very likely safe and secure with either.  (3) Being more “controlled” as the Apple iPhone is has its supporters and detractors.  All in all, it is positive as it continues to keep the iPhone OS stable, and I’ll take reliability every day.  It’s like I expect my car to start EVERY morning.  The biggest justifiable complaint I share is the increasingly arrogant, even condescending attitude Apple expresses towards towards Adobe Flash which is the foundation of so much software on every other platform (laptop, desktop and mobile smart device, except Apple’s).  This I believe is a mistake on Apple’s part and has occurred several times in Apple’s past when they appeared to turn on their third-party partners.  But, no one is without sin in that department.  It would also be great when the long overdue support on the iPhone for tethering (using the iPhone as a wireless modem) and wireless syncing even it continues only through iTunes.  The lack of tethering is really an AT&T;issue since it has been supported across the rest of the planet that Apple covers.  Bandwidth demands are the AT&T;vulnerability. (5) Side-by-side the elegance of the iPhone is without equal now and for the foreseeable future (that’s 1 to 3 years).  4G is now the issue if even 3G isn’t available.  Android is supported by a variety of hardware manufacturers who really got aced by Apple.  (6) If you don’t travel overseas, to include our immediate Northern and Southern neighbors, the Verizon CDMA Android holds its own with the Apple iPhone.  If out of the country also applies then iPhone is the choice.  Which also means, that in urban markets coverage is a toss up.  Simultaneous voice and data is a major plus in my mind for the iPhone and AT&T;. AND now (8) I my mind, and I am biased as a long-term Handspring and the Palm smart phone, the device is the HP (that’s right HP as in Hewlett Packard) Palm Pre Plus on Spring.  Even though I can already hear the howls from some pundits. with one elegant device, a growing roster of APPS, their mobile Linux WebOS fully multi-tasking platform that really does walk and chew gum at the same time, simultaneous voice, data and up to five WiFi connected devices, plus HPs DEEP POCKETS, it deserves to be one of the three serious contenders.  Hope this helps except for the mega run on sentences.  Best of success, Steve

  17. This is an article I was looking for.  My wife and I both have cell service with Verizon, but I have had the iPhone in the back of my head for a while.  I know Verizon has the Droid, but the iPhone seems to get all of the steam.  When I saw the iPhone 4 commercial with integrated live web cam, it got my attention.  So, I want to follow the reviews on this one.  As a matter of fact, we just started to write an article on this as we were gonna follow it the distance.

Would you mind if I posted your article on the Technology section of our blog?  We’ll of course have your website/author information posted. We believe this article will surely gather a group of followers.  Your article is VERY thorough and it will truly keep techies up to date on this new product.

    Thanks!
