Even if your children don’t have an account, they’ve certainly heard enough about it through word of mouth. The latest hangout for tweens and teens isn’t the mall in downtown or any particular club, but rather the chaotic world of cyberspace, at a website called MySpace.com. As the hottest social networking site on the web, MySpace has accumulated an estimated 54 million users in just three years of existence, with many users falling within the teen and twenty-something crowds and approximately 19% under the age of 17. MySpace is a wonderful place to meet others of like mind and interest, but with this sharing of interests come other dangers that are heightened by the unregulated nature of the Internet and the ready availability of personal information online.

  1. In just one year, my son managed to draw a predator through myspace, and give out his (OUR) address.
    Do you want that for your child?
    MySpace moves waaaaaaay too fast.
    What to do?
    I can tell you this, that “keep the lines of communication open” psychobabble evaporates quickly when you have to contemplate the choice between moving and waiting to see if the cops can tag the predator before he gets to your house.

  2. I love this article! I hate Myspace! I had to delete my daughters (15 years old) profile due to a lot of pornography going into her inbox and a lot of perverts were trying to contact her. I would love to post this article on myspace on the bulletin board for everyone to see and read! Some of the stuff I have read on there is horrible! Also, even if you unsubscribe, you are not completely off that website, which I found out. My daughter still gets friend requests from the weird and demented that are on that awful website. Please watch your kids when they are on myspace, cause their are a lot of demented people on there.
