There are many products available that make your computer seem less like a business tool and more like a home media center. Given this, the one component that may lack the popularity you might expect is the TV tuner card. There are sound cards capable of 8-channel surround sound stereo, high-powered speaker systems, and graphics cards displaying on high definition monitors/televisions.

TV tuners are becoming more common in computers as Windows Media Center Edition grows in popularity, but just about any computer with any operating system can tune in TV. This Tech Tip will look at some of the basics of computer TV tuners, including the interfaces, the technologies, and the performance.

  7. I bought a tv tuner and installed it. I added the hardware and software and plugged in the cable wire to the coaxial on the back of the tuner in the computer but I’m not getting a picture. I’m wondering if I need an actual cable BOX from my cable provider (Cablevision) Cause of the card that plugs into my cable box etc.

I’m trying to hook these camera(s) via the remote wireless receiver to the A/V jack of TwinhanDTV card and capture the signals of these camera(s) into my computer but am not able to scan/get the signals from the receiver. 11. Very informative but two years old.  Is there anything new to add such as a NTSC HD tuner that does not require a cable box or in the least offensive case would accept a cable card?

  13. After 10 years of letting someone else decide what I need in a computer, I have started researching and checking things out for myself.  When I went online and found this blog, it really answered a lot of my questions about"computer tv”.  Thanks a lot.

  17. I am along time customer of Direct TV.  I have an HD TV and use the Direct TV box to tune my local over air stations.  They have recently put up another satellite with 100 HD stations.  They came to install the new box and antenna today and informed me that their new box would not give me the over air stations any more. Is there any gizmo that will take a coax i/p from my roof antenna and convert it to HD for my local stations?

  19. How can I connect my Laptop to a TV to be able to see a DVD that is being read in my computer on the TV screen? What type of cable do I need, or do I need more than just a cable?

  23. It has not been mandated that all US broadcasts be in HD, but rather, they must be digital. Digital does not equal High Def.

  25. I am looking to control my TV from my computer by IR.  Where can I find the hardware to do this? I have a background in electronics that I might be able to build this if I can get schematics.

Ideally, I would like to feed my cable-tv into the computer, design a program to read the program names and times and then send IR signals to the TV for my viewing pleasure.

    Thoughts appreciated.
    Steve

  29. It is my understanding that there is NO mandate that U S broadcasts must eventually be in high definition (HD). My understanding is that U S television transmissions are mandated to be changed from analog transmissions to digital transmissions. To my knowledge many T V stations have been transmitting in HIGH DEFINITION format for several years in the analog format.

  31. My son is a long haul trucker.  He needs a wireless laptop computer for work.  He is a sport fanatic and would also like to see if TV is possible.  The wireless computer acquisition and service I’m familiar with, but is there also “wireless” TV?  Thank you for helping.
    Aloha,
    Toni

  33. I believe the discussion should be more of actual capture and manipulation of the tv guide information.  Yes, there are many products that will manipulate the signal but can we download the information design our own TV guide?

  35. Where are the responses to all the comments above mine? I am #18.  It would be nice to read some of the answers to the comments made.  Here’s another comment: How many channels will a tv tuner run?  If you have cable and have the full allotment of all regular and paid channels will the tv tuner run all the channels through your computer?
