Social networking and micro-blogging site Twitter just celebrated its fifth year on March 21. It began as a small project at a podcasting company in San Francisco called Odeo. Thanks to the creative genius of Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams and Biz Stone, the world is closer and more “real-time” than ever before. There is no clearer evidence of this than the role Twitter (and Facebook) played in the recent uprisings in Egypt, Tunisia and Libya.

It took Twitter 3 years, 2 months and 1 day to reach the first 1 billionth tweet. Now there are a billion tweets a WEEK. While the actual number of Twitter users is a moving target, it is no doubt in excess of 200 million. Over the last month, there has been an average of 460,000 new Twitter accounts per day.

  1. It’s not bad enough that we sit on our big butts all day staring at a computer screen, and we email the person sitting next to us, instead of turning around and actually speaking to them. I am amazed that people now hold the phone in two hands and communicate to another person or persons (who they probably don’t even know) by typing with their thumbs. If Alexander Graham Bell came back to life, he would undoubtedly say, “I worked long and hard to develop a device to allow you to speak directly to another person so you don’t have to type out Morris Code. What the hell are you people doing??” As far as Egypt, Tunisia and Libya are concerned; we really don’t know if this is a good thing or not. This is just what we need, three more countries with no direction. Us not knowing what they are going to do, and them not knowing what they are going to do. Sorry I’m not seeing the good in all of this. I could go on but I have got to get away from this GD computer for a while.
