It’s been almost a decade since USB 2.0, also known as Hi-Speed USB, came into our lives, providing a low-cost, high-bandwidth, and hot-pluggable interface that has become the standard for just about every device you can imagine. It’s made using inexpensive components, gives a high-bandwidth connection while providing adequate power and can support up to 127 devices at once.

  5. Is USB 3 another Microsoft over-hyped technology?  USB 2 has always been advertised as 480 mbs but, in practice, it doesn’t come close to firewire (400 mbs).  Anyone who has transferred files with both connections can verify this.  How do they get away with it?

I’m happy to see speed improvements but advertise them fairly and correctly!

  9. I was waiting for USB 3.0 standard for a long time, especially when I had to copy over big files (10GB or more). I think in half a year also USB 3.0 flash disc will cost at reasonable prices. Who needs the USB 3.0 motherboard now, if the memory device with new standard cost cca. 10x as usual USB 2.0 device.

  11. I use firewire for my audio and video it has nothing to do with Microsoft a software company!
there is firewire B that is 800 mbs it takes special card to make it work!
Apple takes credit for firewire,it was the military and film industry using it long before Apple ever did!

  13. USB 3.0 is a hardware standard. All it requires is a thing called DRIVERS.
Too much money to be made off of WinXP, Linux and Macintosh users.

Afterall, there’s no such thing as USB 2.0 add-on cards… oh WAIT - there are! $10~30 and they work on Windows98 through to Vista, oh WOW!

    * Get a clue… when techies can browse the net on a Commodore64 (I have NO idea why) and attach IDE HDs to same 1980/1984 8bit computers. Or even the 1987~1990s Amigas can support USB2.0 with an Add-on Card (Only $190USD - yeah.

By the way I did not pay enywhere near 190usd I payed 20.00 us bucks wholesale!
I used to have Commodore64 I remember how hard it was just to get it to say my name, that was 20 years ago; ha ha ha lol!!!

  17. I’m a big firewire fan. My external hd has firewire and my ipod’s got firewire port. (Actually it’s the only port ‘cause I have the ancient one.) I rarely use my 14 gig flashdrive because it takes time before you could smoothly scan through its files. So thanks for the info, I would certainly test this 3.0.
