Using Your Eee PC as an e-Book Reader

To be honest, both the reader and the geek in me would love to get their hands on a Kindle, Amazon’s e-book reader. Unfortunately, though, the Kindle isn’t available in Canada. So, if I want to read my ever-expanding library of electronic books while on the go, my choices are limited.

I could print out the books, but I’d have trouble justifying such a waste of paper. Or, I could lug my laptop computer with me, but that’s not a great solution on a crowded train or bus. But, if you’re like me and you own an Eee PC, then you have a great way of reading e-books no matter where you are. Best of all, you don’t have to shell out any more money for additional hardware or software. Everything that you need is already on the device.

  1. Just what “exactly” is an Eee PC? I clicked on the link and didn’t figure it out.  I’m a curious person always trying to get more knowledge. I apologize if it’s already answered.

  3. I enjoyed reading your ebook article for the eeepc, I wish to note that I have been using uBook (http://www.gowerpoint.com/) for some time, not only supported for home PCs some also works with PDAs. It’s probhably the untimate ebook reader, they have thought of everything even auto-scrooling, you have to give it a try, note, it’s already on my eeepc smile Oh and ubook is free smile

  7. I used a Handspring visor as an e-book reader for quite some time until I dropped it and broke the screen. I replaced it with a Zire 71 I got off ebay. I can read .pdf files with a free download from adobe and Palm e-book studio does an excellent job converting html books to Palms e-book format. To convert Microsoft’s .lit format to html I use a free program calles ConvertLIT. Since I upgraded to the Zire I get pics in color (diagrams are admittedly small or involve a lot of scrolling) and it uses an SD card for storage so if I have to travel I can take as many books as I want and listen to music too. I did have to buy E-book Studio, but all the other software either came with the Palm or was free. E-book Studio only works in Windows, but everything else works just as well in Linux and OSX.

  11. There’s no need at all to rotate the page inside Adobe Acrobat, simply press Crl+Alt+Right (or Left) keys in keyboard! Also u should try that shortcu with the Readability bookmarklet in forefox, it’s awesome for webpages too.
