Wikipedia – All Aboard!

So much has been written and said about the website known as Wikipedia that many people may start to wonder what exactly Wikipedia is. Wikipedia is simply a Wiki Encyclopedia (a wiki being defined as “a Web site that allows visitors to make changes, contributions, or corrections” [Webster.com]). If the Encyclopedia Britannica is a chauffer-driven limousine, then Wikipedia is the bus loaded with passengers with each having a turn at the steering wheel.

In this Tech Tip, we’re going to take a look at this Wikipedia bus and check out what exactly it is.

  3. Thank you both for your comments.  For a couple of specifics:

    1. This may be beyond the audience that we try to reach within the realm of Tech Tips (it is something that would appeal more a more specialized segment of the TT community, namely students, teachers and researchers).  One website For this specific topic I’d really recommend is Wikiversity (http://en.wikiversity.org/) if you’d like to look more into using a Wiki for this particular purpose.

    2. That would be a terrific idea - if Wikipedia allowed advertising.  The Wiki community really frowns on company Wikipedia articles reading more like commercials than an encyclopedia article.
