When you think about doing any kind of writing, the software that probably comes to mind is Microsoft Word or OpenOffice.org Writer. They’re powerful, they’re big, and they pack a lot of features and functions. But many of us don’t use a fraction of those features and functions. 1. Sun Systems has all of the Microsoft programs ie: Word, Excel, and others..(absolutely identical in almost everyway) for free.  The are called:OpenOffce.org also, Portable Apps provides these, along with Firefox, and all other Mozilla programs for a flash drive that takes up only 1.1 gb on the flash drive. They will soon be providing a Linux operating sytem so that a flash drive can be it’s very own computer.  And.. it is all FREE.

  5. Scott, I can’t believe you mentioned Google Docs without mentioning Zoho. Zoho has long since out passed Google Docs in functionality and offerings. They also offer a business version that packages several components and allows the admin to create groups. I am a recent convert myself. Check them out. Zoho.com

  7. Another free desktop contender that works with rtf format files (most commercial programs will save to and read rtf) is Jarte (jarte.com). I have been using it for about a year now for most of my writing. It too, includes just the basics but most of the time that is all I need.

William, OpenOffice is a great alternative if you are just looking to duplicate Microsoft’s complexity for no money. Not so good if you want simple…

The downside of online services is that they are online. If I’m not then I’m screwed!

Any info for Adobe to WORD applications that really convert tables etc. without the garbage conversions of SoftScan?
